13 Then Moses said to God, "Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, "The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they say to me, "What is His name?' what shall I say to them?"

14 And God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And He said, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, "I AM has sent me to you."'

15 Moreover God said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: "The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is my name forever, and this is my memorial to all generations.'

Exodus 3:13-15

I have always loved the line from Exodus Chapter three in the Old Testament that reads, “ I AM Who I AM.” It wasn't until I discovered New Thought Christianity that I came to understand for myself the broader meaning of those words that God spoke to Moses that day. How many of us still have the belief that taking God's name in vain is when we use the word God followed by the word damn? I was brought up to believe that speaking such a thing was not only a very distasteful, as well as disrespectful, sin, but it actually meant to vainly misuse the name of God. Such words were never allowed to be spoken in my home growing up and even to this day, I can assure you, would not be tolerated in the presence of my Mother.

The use of those two infamous words were never intended to be used as a swear word, or even to blaspheme God, but were expressed verbally to curse something. Historically when one wanted to place a curse it was spoken almost as a prayer or an invocation asking God to damn or curse a particular thing or person.

I have never been one to use that particular swearing when I may have felt the need to vent some pent up anger or aggression, and have to honestly admit that I don't like hearing others use it when I am in their company. Is it old tapes playing in my mind of what is right and what is wrong, or is it that my moral code says it's not something that I feel comfortable with within my own spirit?

I think I would have to say it's a little of both, and I am truly okay with having them monitor my thoughts on how I choose to speak and express myself. I find others are quite comfortable with using such language with little thought or hesitation. For myself I not only wonder about how speaking things of lower vibration affect others around me, but also how when I speak those things do they tend to affect my own psyche and vibrations.

In New Thought we believe that when God told Moses to tell the people of Israel that I AM had sent him, that he was in fact naming himself. I AM Who I AM! We believe that I AM is God's name in us. Therefore anytime we would use the I AM in a negative statement we are in fact using God's name in vain. For us to affirm that I AM sick, or I AM tired, I AM broke, or I AM so angry I could do this or that, we speak negatively against the God Presence within us. Try expressing how you feel when you are not feeling so great or even angry and not use the I AM! Is it easy? No! Is it a worthwhile challenge? Yes! The Bible tells us that it is not what we put in our bodies that makes us sick, but rather it is what comes out, such as, the words we speak and the thoughts we think. Thoughts held in mind, create after their kind. Do you speak encouraging words to yourself and others? Are you mindful of the use of your I AM's? Rather than saying I AM sick and tired, try saying I need to rest and relax. Instead of saying I AM broke, simply say, I choose not to spend my money on that. Begin to practice speaking positive statements such as I AM wonderful, I AM Joyful, I AM abundantly blessed, and I AM healthy, wealthy and wise! The words we speak do change our vibrations and the vibrations around us. Speak words of power; speak words that uplift and support rather than destroy. Use the very name of God in you to serve mankind and make a difference right where you are. As we grow spiritually, we become more awakened to things of a higher realm and we rise in our consciousness. As we open to the energies of all that is good in the Universe, we expand our abilities to act from that place within us that is of Spirit, and there is no greater place from which to live consciously than in the kingdom of peace and love.

Be good to yourself, be good to others, walk your talk and Keep spreading “The Light.”
