Thoughts of a Seeker

Return to the Table of Contents

November 1999

Several things this month: One of our regular contributing poets, Chelse Elliot, responded to last month's Two Poets: Woman's Voice with a poem of her own (included in this month's Gryphon's Nest) and also suggested having a page for "Journeys of Being Woman." Not a bad idea, but I also knew that if "Seeker" is to have a page particularly devoted to stories from one gender, then it must have stories from the other gender. So this is an invitation to you readers out there: send me a story of what it has meant to be journeying through your life inside of your male or female skin and what being male or female brings to bear on it. Concentrate on relating a telling episode, obvious or subtle, that made a difference in your life. I look forward to seeing what comes forth.

By the way, if you are submitting something for the first time, please incorporate your writing within your email message. I really prefer not to download files from utter strangers. And if your email doesn't have the capacity to hold your entire article, break it up into smaller chunks. I can put them together easily.

I received a newsletter from Martin Gray, the creator of the website "Sacred Sites," a collection of his photographs of hundreds of sacred places around the globe. It was a link of the month maybe a year ago. He's getting ready to go on another trek to North Africa "to visit, study and photograph a dozen Islamic sacred sites in ten countries. I am returning to the pilgrim trail, to undertake a focused meditation and spiritual exploration of Islam," leaving Nov. 25. He is planning to create an on-line video journal and upload every so often when he's on the road. You can visit his site and find out more about his trip at Sacred Sites.

What other glib words have been running through my mind to share here? Are you at least preparing a modicum of food and other supplies for January? If you don't need it, then you can count your blessings, and if you do, you can count your foresightedness triply blessed.

Consider this: if labyrinths hold earth energy, what would be the effect of building labyrinths on places of known geologic activity, i.e., along the faultlines, hot volcanic spots? Just a thought that popped into my head as I listened to Rev. Dr. Lauren Artress this past week.

Heed the winds and the waters
the lights of sun and moon
the birds that fly your path
be here now.

P.S. After finishing this at midnight, I woke at 4:30 the next morning and couldn't really get back to sleep. An hour later of tossing and turning and into my head suddenly popped the one thought which I had meant to include in this letter. It is this: I was simply wondering if any of you cared to help support "Seeker's" website by contributing to the monthly fee that I pay. Or if you have suggestions for free sites that would not have to have advertising and would have a Denver dial-up access number. If so, send me an e-mail. And thanks for thinking about it.
